Therapeutic modalities
While there are many ways to approach therapy, there are a few modalities that I have the most training and experience with. I believe that building a trusting and supportive relationship with my clients is one of the most important elements of healing (research backs this up as well!). I enjoy helping people learn how to create a healthier relationship with themselves, as well as healing past trauma so that life in the present can be more fulfilling.
Mindfulness-based
Become more aware of your thoughts, emotions, and what your body is telling you by tuning into the present moment.
Person-centered
I have a positive view of human nature, and see even dysfunctional behaviors as attempts to meet valid human needs. I aim to help you access your own internal wisdom and believe that every person’s journey is unique.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT is a skill-based therapy that includes 4 focus areas to alleviate suffering. These are: Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Although DBT is often done in a group setting, I adapt some elements to individual therapy. DBT is particularly helpful for individuals who need help with emotion regulation, black and white thinking, and healthier coping mechanisms.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a well researched and evidence-based treatment for trauma and PTSD, including complex PTSD. EMDR is also effective for other issues, including depression, anxiety, addiction, phobias and upsetting life events that you are struggling with (ie. a breakup, an embarrassing experience). Find more information here.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed
IFS can help you understand the different aspects of your personality with more compassion and less judgment, and can help you care for and heal your inner child. The goal of IFS is ultimately to be guided by your true Self rather than, say, a critical or anxious part of yourself. This form of therapy can often include meditative components and visualization.
“Like the sun, the Self can be temporarily obscured, but it never disappears.” - Richard Schwartz, creator of IFS.
